A New Commandment
In Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said that the Old Testament law and prophets could be summed up in two commands:
- Love God
- Love your neighbor as yourself
But in John 13:34-35 Jesus said that something Different is expected of believers! Something so special that it needs a new commandment.
34 “I give you a new commandment—to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.
You would think the special commandment would be for loving unbelievers! But no, it is for loving believers!
- What – “to love one another” – v. 34b
- How – “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” – v. 34c
- Why – “Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.” – v. 35
